Frequently Asked Questions | Camp St. Iakovos

  • Who Are The Camp Staff?

The fun and wonder of Camp St. Iakovos is made possible by the faithful Orthodox monastics, clergy, and laity that volunteer their time throughout the week. We are grateful for the experienced counselors, chefs, nurses, and instructors participating in the program.

  • What Should We Pack?

All campers are expected to bring their own clothing, towels, toiletries, bed linens, bug spray, and sunscreen. Cell phones, music players, laptops, and other electronic devices are not permitted. Food should also not be included in suitcases. Campers will not have access to laundry services and should bring enough clothing for the entire week.

  • Can I Visit My Child During The Week?

Family visits are not permitted, as they can cause a disruption to the program and increase feelings of homesickness. If you are ever worried, please contact the camp, and a staff member will be happy to update you on your child’s experience. We understand your concerns as a parent and appreciate the trust that you place in us.

  • What If My Child Is A Picky Eater Or Has Dietary Restrictions?

Well-balanced, kid-friendly meals are served in the Trapeza each day. Special meals will not be made for picky eaters and we encourage campers to embrace any new food or meals. Our chef is able to accommodate medical/dietary restrictions. Please note them on your camper’s health form and we will be sure to discuss with your family in advance.

  • Will Campers Have Access To Electricity, Air Conditioning, And Plumbing?

Yes! Camp St. Iakovos will be held within the Monastery building, so campers will have electricity, A/C, plumbing, running water, etc. at all times. Note: campers will not have access to laundry services, please bring enough clothing for the week.

  • Will Campers Attend Orthodox Services While At Camp?

Yes! Campers will attend Matins each morning and Vespers in the evening. We also lead Evening Prayers and Devotionals before bed. Throughout the week campers will have the opportunity to go to Confession. And on Sunday campers will attend Divine Liturgy. All services will be held in the main Sanctuary of the Monastery.

  • What If It Rains Or Gets Too Hot?

As we are located in Oklahoma, the camp may be affected by extreme heat. Every camper will receive a water bottle upon arrival and will always have access to cool water throughout the day. Our planned activities occur both outside and inside, and we are able to adjust the schedule if necessary if heat or rain interferes.

  • My Child Has Never Been To Camp Before, What If They Get Homesick?

In the days leading up to camp, reassure them that they will have a good time. Talk about the fun activities planned such as swimming, arts and crafts, music, and games. Show them what A Typical Day At Camp will look like. Missing home is normal and we will do everything possible to make your child’s camp experience enjoyable.
